Out of interest, when in the LotR timeline is it set? Back in the day, the roleplaying game was set in a fairly neutral period in the third age to avoid carrying too much baggage from the books.
Can't remember off-hand if it was set between The Hobbit and LotR or even before The Hobbit. Sauron was still in Mirkwood anyhow.
