Is this a decent graphic card?

TBH their FPS results seem rather low in general even for the ATI, I'd say there's something seriously wrong with their test system in general, not just in terms of the nVidia specific tests.

Also I've noticed something about that site previously where their tests were questionable, I think there was an article on Slashdot about it maybe 6months back I just can't recall what exactly it was.

Edit: NM found out why, page 1 of the review:

"Again keep in mind that we’re testing the NVIDIA cards with the image quality setting at “High Quality” mode rather than the driver default setting of “Quality”. We’ve noted that the HQ setting significantly reduces the amount of texture shimmering in games such as Battlefield 2. This change does negatively impact NVIDIA’s performance, but it’s a tweak many NVIDIA users seem to be doing with their own cards so we’re doing it too."

They're intentionally crippling the nVidia card's performance without making the same change on the ATI (if the ATI even supports it). Texture shimmering is a fault of the game engine and so the HQ setting is a driver option that will allow the drivers and card to correct a common programming fault in the engine at real time which does indeed lower the possible FPS.

Also I remembered what this site was getting slated for previously, it was one that gave reviews claiming that the KillerNIC network card could improve pings by like 40ms, which frankly is physically impossible unless somehow it can make packets go faster than the speed of light and modify every router across the internet to parse packets faster so as to remove latency so it's pretty clear this site has taken bribes for good reviews previously too :p

If anyone was planning on getting the 8800 - wait a couple of months until they got better support. Atm loads of new games (like RB6 Vegas) wont really work good with the 8800.

So if it's a load of crap I'll just blame Ankh as usual :D
Will get more RAM later if necessary.
Buying a ready-built system with a core2duo processor would cost CHF 1'000.00+ more than that here, so <crosses fingers>
Thanks for all the advice guys (even if I ended up buying the 'wrong' graphic card) :)

tbh it just means that if you were to buy the nVidia card and did for some reason have any problem I wont get the blame but in fact can say "I told you so" now :p Nah it'll probably work fine though :)

I can always replace it with an NVidia card in 6 months & put the ATI one in my daughters PC :D
It's better than the ATI card she's got in there now & her MB supports PCI-E so I could probably sell it as "upgrading daughters PC" :p

Your post was the last one before the order place, no question it's all your fault when it goes wrong :)

Seriously though the system looks fine, have fun building it ;)

Hmmm well everything arrived yesterday & everything was looking good until I opened the graphic card box & found a little copper heat-sink floating around in the box which should have been stuck to the back of the board. I glued it back on where it had broken off & put the system together & it does boot properly but 10-15 seconds after booting all I get on my screen is the little green power light blinking.
OFC I have no way of knowing for sure if that's really the cause of the problem or if it's something else entirely
<sigh>
<wonders why these things always happen to him>

well I guess it's 90% GC
10 chance of being MB or RAM module
I'll have to ring the shop & talk with them I guess
No intrinsic right to return faulty goods in Switzerland unfortunately.
Have to depend on goodwill of shop =/

Cause I could claim it as damage in transit & then the posts insurance would probably have to pay...
but cant be 100% sure it's really the GC which makes it a bit awkward
