Beware of Nests in your Chimneys!

Post by Gandelf »

I thought you guys might find this interesting...

Yesterday, I had all the chimneys in my house swept. I'd noticed that Jackdaws had made a permanent home on my rooftop and guessed they'd built a nest in at least one of the pots. The Chimney Sweep did a good job and the picture below shows what he removed from just one chimney...

I weighed the bag of twigs and it came out at about 2st. 5lb. (about 15Kg). I could hardly believe my eyes! I've now had wire meshes fitted on the pots, so the Jackdaws cannot build another nest.

Nests can be very dangerous in chimneys... if you have a real fire, there is a danger of setting your chimney on fire. Also, if you have a gas fire, nests are extremely dangerous because they prevent dangerous fumes from escaping, including the deadly Carbon Monoxide.

It may be worthwhile checking your own chimneys!

I had to have it done now because I've ripped out the old gas fires and the fireplace in the Living Room. I wanted my chimneys swept before I had the new fires fitted and the fireplace rebuilt in the Living Room, ready for when the cold weather returns.

Likewise, the Jackdaws now have time to build a nest elsewhere before the cold weather returns.

Chicks should of flown by now. Food is plentiful. No major harm done.

and while not wanting to be seen as a nasty person... I would rather see destruction of a nest in a place like a chimney than see that nest cause the death of the person or people living in the house either through fumes or the burning of their house...
